So far back that it was called The Abbot on the Hill when the YSPC visited it for the first time nine years ago.
But whichever name was on the sign out-front, the people inside have always been huge supporters of the event.
In fact for that first visit they opened-up just so we could stop-in. The Monk’s Table is now such a Summerhill staple it’s hard to remember a time when it was a fledgling bar trying to build it’s clientele and only open Monday-Friday evenings.
I’d like to think that opening for the YSPC that Saturday in 2006 helped piqué local interest in their now bustling brunch hour, but the truth is the quality of The Monk’s Table’s service, fare and (most importantly) beer did that all on its own.
Since the downtown reboot of the YSPC in 2009, The Monk’s Table has traditionally been the last stop on the crawl. This year, since we’re heading south down Yonge rather than up, it will be our first—for brunch.
